Artificial Infant Milk & WHO Code
Course Objectives:
- Participants will be able to list the major nutritional components of breastmilk and ABM
- Participants will be able to describe the effects of artificial infant milk on the infant’s brain, and immune system
- Participants will be able to describe in general terms the cost/benefits of breastfeeding vs ABM feeding
- Participants will be able to list the effects which the mother, and the infant who is fed artificial infant milk is placed at risk for, if given just one bottle
- Participants will be able to describe in general terms why infants fed ABM have more infections, more allergic responses, and less optimal growth and development than breastfed infants
- Participants will be able to explain the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk substitutes
- Participants will be able to list the ten steps of the Baby Friendly Initiative
Course Outline: 4 hours breaks not included
1. Human vs. Bovine Milk Composition (60 min)
Casein : whey protein ratio for cow milk, presence of ß-lactoglobulin
Human milk is used as the general nutrient guide for ABM. Similar categories of nutrients, not identicial and NO live cells
amino acid differences
Types and forms of ABM. Cow milk has lower lactose
Ca:P ratio - risks of hypocalcemia, tetany, hyperphosphatemia
- Both iron and zinc are more efficiently absorbed from human milk than from cow milk.
2. Increased risk factors associated with ABM (60 min)
- Even small amounts of ABM can change babies microbial flora
- Allergies, asthma, O.M., S.I.D.S.,
- Gastroenteritis, NEC, Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative colitis,
- IDDM, Obesity, sepsis, UTI, acute leukemia
- ↓ antibody titres to immunizations
- Genetically modified ingredients
- Errors made during manufacturers and during preparation
- Environmental factors – container hazards, plastic bottles, cans, plastic linings, logos
3. The costs and impact of ABM feeding (55 min)
- Health care costs to mother, infant and family
- Health care costs to the society
- Environmental costs
- Loss of work hours due to illness with ABM fed babies
- Big money in the pockets of large corporations who lead the ABM industry
4. International Code and other strategies (60 min)
